Trasteel Magona S.r.l., a newly established company within Trasteel Group, has taken over operations at the historic La Magona d'Italia steelworks in Piombino, Tuscany, effective 1 October 2026. The transition follows a business unit lease agreement with Liberty Magona and represents the first step towards the planned acquisition of the business, subject to completion of the ongoing restructuring process.
With more than 150 years of industrial history, La Magona is a well-established name in Italian steel manufacturing, specialising in cold-rolled, galvanised and pre-painted flat steel products for a wide range of industrial applications. Its production facilities, together with the experience and expertise of its workforce, provide a strong foundation for the plant's next phase.
Under its new identity, Trasteel Magona, the facility will progressively resume production, with the aim of restoring its full operational capacity and exceeding 500,000 tonnes of annual output by the end of 2027. The plan also provides for the continuity of approximately 500 jobs, recognising the people behind Magona as a central part of its industrial recovery.
For Trasteel, the operation strengthens its industrial presence and brings a well-established manufacturing facility into its international network. By combining the plant's existing technical capabilities with Trasteel's trading expertise, global sourcing activities and commercial relationships, the company aims to restore Magona's position as a reliable supplier to the Italian and European steel markets.
Fratelli Cosulich Group will contribute directly to this new phase by managing the logistics and customs operations associated with the plant. Drawing on its experience in international transport and supply chain services, the Group will support the operational flows connecting Trasteel Magona with its suppliers and customers.
The collaboration brings together complementary expertise: Trasteel's industrial and commercial capabilities, the established know-how of the Magona workforce, and Fratelli Cosulich Group's logistics network. Together, these elements will support the gradual recovery of the plant and its ability to serve customers consistently as production increases.
At the heart of this new chapter is a shared approach to business: building solid, long-lasting relationships with reliable suppliers and customers worldwide, while giving an established industrial operation the opportunity to develop its potential.
