Earlier this month, the vibrant city of Miami hosted an extraordinary event—the naming ceremony of MSC World America, MSC Cruises' latest flagship. This grand occasion was paired with an unforgettable three-day cruise to the breathtaking Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, MSC’s private island in the Bahamas. As part of the activities, attendees also celebrated the inauguration of the MSC Foundation Marine Conservation Centre, a testament to MSC’s commitment to marine sustainability.

A highlight of the programme  was for sure the panel discussion titled, “Navigating Towards Net-Zero: The Cruise Industry's Path to Decarbonisation,” where we had the privilege of participating through the insights shared by our Head of New Fuels, Chicca Franchini.

The session brought together industry leaders to explore strategies and tackle the challenges of achieving decarbonisation in the cruise sector. Linden Coppell, Vice President Sustainability & ESG, MSC Cruises, set the stage introducing the panel’s theme and objectives while providing a clear overview of the session.

Marie-Caroline Laurent, SVP Government Relations, MSC Group, delivered a high-level perspective on MSC’s decarbonisation ambitions, highlighting the broader policy and global regulatory context and emphasizing the importance of cross-sector collaboration.

Michele Francioni, Chief Energy Transition Officer, MSC Cruises, shared insights into MSC Cruises’ implementation strategies, focusing on practical measures being integrated within the cruise division.

It was an honor to engage in this dynamic discussion alongside esteemed representatives from Chantiers de l'Atlantique, Wärtsilä, Shell Marine, Axpo Group, and MSC Cruises. The conversation underscored the critical roles of alternative fuels, technological innovation, and strong supply chain collaboration in shaping a sustainable future for the cruise industry.

For Fratelli Cosulich, Chicca Franchini highlighted the challenges the LNG sector is facing, including the lack of infrastructure, the need for long-term agreements, and the high costs of assets. She also emphasized the role that renewable fuels play in the energy transition. As pioneers in the LNG sector, with two LNG Bunkering Vessels (LNGBVs) delivered in 2023 and 2024, we have positioned ourselves as first movers in this segment. Nonetheless, our investments don’t stop with LNG; we strongly believe in diversification.

Our biofuel initiatives start with investing in an alternative fuels fleet, by becoming proud owners of six IMO2 tankers, which will be able to deliver Bio blends up to B100, as well as methanol. Moreover we can guarantee a global trading coverage and a physical setup in Genoa, enabling the delivery of biofuels using FAME-end feedstocks that achieve emission reduction factors above 95%.

The panel was just one highlight within a rich and engaging program. The event also featured exquisite networking opportunities, inspiring speeches, and a sponsorship cocktail during which Marine Energy | Fratelli Cosulich was honored with a plaque presented by Mr. Vago.

Attendees were treated to a sustainability tour of the MSC World America, including a visit to the engine rooms where the MSC team shared insights into the cutting-edge systems and solutions onboard.

This event was a true celebration of progress and innovation in the cruise industry.
