A new chapter for Piombino's steelworks with Trasteel Magona
Since 1 October 2026, operations at the historic La Magona d’Italia steelworks in Piombino, Tuscany, have been managed by Trasteel Magona, a newly established company within Trasteel Group, part of Cosulich Group's Steel Activities business.
The transition follows a business unit lease agreement with Liberty Magona and marks the first step towards a planned acquisition, subject to the completion of the ongoing restructuring process.
With more than 150 years of industrial history, the plant specialises in cold-rolled, galvanised and pre-painted flat steel products. Under the new management, production will progressively resume, with the aim of exceeding 500,000 tonnes annually by the end of 2027. The plan also provides for the continuity of approximately 500 jobs, building on the experience and expertise of the existing workforce.
Trasteel will bring its international trading and sourcing expertise to the project, while Fratelli Cosulich Group will manage the plant's logistics and customs operations, supporting its connections with suppliers and customers as production resumes.
